That 70s Show actor turns director
Valderrama, 29, is the former host of the MTV series "Yo Momma" and the voice of Manny in the animated children's show "Handy Manny." But this month, Valderrama got behind the camera to direct the filming of an episode of Disney's "The Imagination Movers" children's TV show in New Orleans.
Though Valderrama has directed some music videos and a public service announcement for Latino Get Out the Vote, this was his first time directing for a television series.

Pitbull Rips Into Kanye West
Pitbull is on the list of celebrities that are bashing Kanye . The MC from Miami was was extremly outspoken on Kanye West after he interrupted Taylor Swift’s VMA.
“Kanye, what a fu**in’ disrespectful motherf**ker,” he told TMZ. “I tell you one thing, he know who to do that to though.”
After a reporter asked him "what would happen if Kanye did that to you? Pitbull responded “Ay yay yay! I come from a neighborhood where they say, ‘Don’t talk about it, be about it.’”

Misconceptions about Latinos confronted
Organizers of the Wyoming Valley Interfaith Council’s Hispanic Heritage Month event at King’s College on Sunday sought to dispel misconceptions in the minds of local people about the Latino community.
According to Latino community activists, doing that is a big challenge, and despite progress they say there is still a long way to go.
Angel Jirau, a champion of local Latinos who works with local schools, governments and community groups, said the Spanish-speaking population is the fastest-growing group in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
In the next two decades it will be the “strongest voting block,” he said. Those who harbor fearful and bigoted views may have to “deal with the consequences” in the near future, Jirau said.
The Latinos are hard-working people who want to contribute to the communities and maintain pride in their heritage, he said. They are not here, he said, to steal jobs, change the language and commit crimes.
The immigrants who come to Wilkes-Barre like it because the city is still basically a small community similar to the towns they left in Latin America. Jirau stressed Latinos are a “God-fearing people” and the local church presence helps them to settle in.
During the event he addressed a group of young Latino dancers. He stressed they become “involved to enrich the community.”
He also told them to understand they are not the only immigrant group who have suffered when trying to assimilate into local society. Jirau pointed to similar barriers faced by the Irish and Italian immigrants.
“It’s not easy to become a citizen,” he said. “The paperwork is horrendous.”
Carmen Vasquez, a volunteer dance instructor, led the RJG Latino Multicultural Dance Group that performed several different Latin American variations. She said she started teaching dancing to the children in her church religious education classes in 2007. Since then, she said, the attendance has grown to 35 male and female students.
Two of her top performers earned scholarships at King’s College. Rhina Navarro and Natali Mejia both showed their talent along with about 20 other performers.
Latin dances involve a lot of “passion,” Vasquez said. The children learn it to “preserve their culture,” she added.
Marela Zacarias, from Mexico City, displayed her hand-painted mural depicting “what it means to be an immigrant.” It showed the contrasts between the “repression” faced by scapegoated immigrants and the “empowerment” they achieve by hard work.
She told the group the hard-working Latinos have become a key element in the local economy.
Zacarias, who works as an immigrant rights activist, said she strives to “educate and communicate” the truth about Mexican people.
Corrupt Mexican government policies, open-trade agreements that favor large American businesses, and the draw by American companies to bring in “cheap labor” are the reasons the Mexican people venture into the United States, she said.
It is more productive to cross the border and find work than to try an run a small business in Mexico competing against Wal-Mart and large food companies, she said.
Jirau commended county and city officials and King’s for being “very gracious” in their willingness to help. However, he stressed, Latinos “do not want hand-outs.”

Perez Hilton Presents 3 Buzz Bands At Variety Playhouse
Controversial gossip blogger Perez Hilton hosted the opening night of The Perez Hilton Presents Tour 2009! Thursday night at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta’s Little Five Points. The showcase had a modest turnout despite featuring Perez Hilton and buzz bands Ladyhawke (New Zealand), Ida Maria (Norway) and New York’s Semi Precious Weapons. Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira, already has plenty to do running his gossip site, PerezHilton.com, and a fashion site, CocoPerez.com. His hard work is all part of a plan, he said, to expand his brand and become “the gay, Latino Oprah.” Pursuing such lofty goals has also resulted in a few high-profile controversies, including an alleged assault involving the Black Eyed Peas, numerous “outings” of purported gay entertainers, and the media firestorm that surrounded his gay marriage question to former Miss California, Carrie Prejean. On June 25, 2009, shortly after Michael Jackson had gone into cardiac arrest, Hilton posted an article about the star’s illness, claiming it was a publicity stunt.

MARC ANTHONY WILL MARK BIRTHDAY WITH HISPANIC HONOUR
Salsa singer MARC ANTHONY will have a birthday to remember this year (09) - he will be honoured by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute for his career achievements on the day he turns 41.
Jennifer Lopez's husband, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, will spend the evening of 16 September (09) in the company of the Latin community in Washington, D.C. when he will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The prizegiving will take place during the Institute's annual awards gala.

Juanes' Cuba Concert Details Announced
An international lineup of Latin acts will join Colombian rocker Juanes at his controversial "Paz Sin Fronteras" (Peace Without Borders) concert, scheduled for Havana, Cuba Sept. 20.
The free concert, which coincides with the United Nations' International Day of Peace, will also feature Spanish pop act Miguel Bosé and Puerto Rican tropical star Olga Tañón in addition to Cuban artists Amaury Perez, X Alfonso, Carlos Varela, Los Van Van, Silvio Rodriguez and Orishas. CuCu Diamantes and Yerba Buena, Italian artist Jovanotti, Puerto Rico's Danny Rivera, Ecuador's Juan Fernando Velasco, and Spain's Victor Manuel and Luis Eduardo Aute are also on the bill.
In contrast to Juanes' last "Paz Sin Fronteras" concert, staged last year to defuse an imminent conflict between Colombia and Venezuela, this year's lineup is shorter on major, internationally commercial Latin acts. The concert has raised the hackles of some Cuban exiles, who perceive the concert as a show of support for the Castro regime. Juanes has repeatedly defended the concert -- often via his Twitter feed -as an apolitical expression of peace and a desire to bring nations together through music.
The Sept. 20 concert will be staged at the city's Jose Marti Revolution Plaza between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. local time. There will be no presenters, and organizers have requested that both the performers and the audience wear all white as a symbol of peace.
According to a news release from Juanes' camp, local production costs for the sponsor-free event will be covered by the Cuban Institute of Music, part of Cuba's Ministry of Culture. Juanes has also said that he, Bosé and Tañón are covering production costs themselves. None of the artists performing are being paid to perform.
Spanish composers' society SGAE, Air Europa, A&C Charters and Aerosur are pitching in as well to cover rehearsals and airfare. Over 160 journalists have been credentialed to cover the concert, which will be aired via satellite through Cuban TV. The feed for the concert will be made available to any TV, online or radio outlet.

Shakira Added To ALMA Awards Line-Up
'She Wolf' singer Shakira is the latest performer added to the 2009 ALMA Awards (American Latino Media Arts), staged next week.The Columbian pop star will join the previously confirmed line-up of Sean Kingston, Nelly Furtado, Pitbull and David Archuleta, by providing live entertainment on the night.
The ceremony will be held on September 17 at Royce, and broadcast the following night on ABC (8pm-10pm EST).
'Desperate Housewives' hottie Eva Longoria will be hosting the event, alongside TV funnyman George Lopez.

Wisin Y Yandel Call Their Video Music Award Nomination A 'Blessing'
Duo are up against Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Cobra Starship and Lady Gaga.
The MTV Video Music Awards celebrate the best of the best in music, but this year brings a major first: Latin duo Wisin y Yandel scored a Best Pop Video nomination for their video for "Abusadora," from their recent LP La Revolución. What's the big deal? The Puerto Rican duo are the first Latinos in the 26-year history of the Video Music Awards to score a nomination with a song written completely in Spanish. They're up against some stiff competition in the category: Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Cobra Starship (featuring Leighton Meester) and Lady Gaga.
The duo, phoning in from Argentina, told MTV News, "To be the first [Spanish-language song] to be nominated is truly a blessing," Yandel said. (Note: This interview was conducted in Spanish.) "We were recently sitting down, taking a quick break, and I turned to Wisin and we look at each other with amazement because we still can't believe all of the good blessings that have come our way. It's truly a blessing."
It's also become a reason for the pair to take English lessons.
"Never, never would we have thought this was going to happen," Yandel continued. "I told Wisin, 'Yo, we need to learn to speak speak English!' We are actually in talks of getting a tutor who will travel with us to start learning, because I always said that English is a language you really need to know, especially now."
When asked how Wisin y Yandel plan to handle the red carpet at the big show, Yandel said, "Our manager, Edgar Andino, and our bodyguard, Ray, are fluent in English so I'm sure they will have our backs. Regardless, I think the people want to hear our own language. But I also have to say that when we perform in New York everybody who attends our concerts is from every ethnicity and they sing to our songs — so if they put in the effort to learn our songs in Spanish, why can't we return the favor, right? But I truly believe that we will learn. We are troopers and we can do anything."
